I have been using SE for over a year now and I have found it to be the best social networking script out there. I have tried the pilot group scripts but found them to be cumbersome and not easy to use. www.faceamania.com would use no other script now.

Being a website developer, although i can develop a custom social networking script, but we strongly recommend socialengine for use on a social networking website for our clients. The Prior reasons being the following :
1. Highly Customizable - using TPL - It's quite simple to move around stuff without much php knowledge.
2. Smooth frame of updates coming up at regular intervals.
3. Totally Decoded - Customizing an encoded script is a pain.
4. High availability of Plugins, Mods and Templates.
5. Smooth Server-Script relationship causing not much serverload.
6. Smooth Backend.

Wide Range of Plugins and Modifications, which can help someone develop any kind of website, including business listings, shopping portal with affiliate linking ( as we worked on http://zingtree.com), Location Based Dating / Friendship Portal (As on http://sorternity.com), Dedicated to particular topic ( As on http://tennisters.com), Something dedicated to a region ( As on http://asiamagic.com), or maybe simply a clone of facebook like http://feujbook.com.
